Shiatsu
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a holistic complementary therapy, which aims to treat the whole person, working on a physical, mental and emotional level. Shiatsu originates in Japan and is influenced by Chinese and Western knowledge. It is based on similar principles to acupuncture, but needles are not used. During a Shiatsu treatment pressure is applied to areas of the body using the hands, elbow, knees and feet. Gentle stretches, holding and supportive techniques are also used. Everybody responds to touch, and the healing power of touch is an ancient art, which people are now beginning to recognize again and is increasingly being studied in mainstream medicine.
Shiatsu acts to rebalance the body’s energy, to promote well being, support good health and prevent illness.
In Japanese, Shiatsu means finger pressure. It is a powerful healing art based on the human body as a system of energy, known as KI, chi or prana, which circulates in channels known as meridians. When this energy is flowing freely, we experience emotional, physical and mental health. When this energy becomes blocked, we experience illness, distress or pain. Releasing this energy can relieve tensions, restore health and psychological balance and re-establish harmony.
What can I expect?
Shiatsu has been influenced by Traditional Chinese Medicine and works on the same energy system as acupuncture. Instead of needles, Shiatsu uses a number of techniques such as pressure, stretches, rocking, percussion and palming. During treatment sessions, the client remains fully clothed, lying on a comfortable mat on the floor, though treatment can be done in any position, on a chair or bed, for example.
The initial consultation involves diagnosis and treatment with the duration and frequency of sessions depending on the individual's symptoms. Sessions may include dietary, lifestyle and exercise recommendations.
What conditions are Shiatsu good for?
Shiatsu is a safe and gentle therapy that can help with most conditions. Sometimes it works directly, but other times it offers support and space for people to begin to come to terms with the problems they face. Many people enjoy the restorative effects of Shiatsu to support their health and well-being, to achieve deep relaxation and let go of the daily stresses of modern living.
What should I wear?
It is best to wear loose fitting or stretchy clothes that don’t restrict movement. Long sleeves are preferable, and it is good to have a jumper or cardigan for warmth as your body temperature often drops a little during a treatment. Avoid wearing a skirt or jeans, and wear or bring a clean pair of socks. You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment.
You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment, which takes place on a special mat (a futon) on the floor. Each treatment is tailored to your specific needs, taking account of your medical and health history, age and present condition.
