Michaela Scott

BSc MNIMH

Michaela began her training at Leeds University where she studied Medical Sciences for 2 years before transferring to a degree in Herbal Medicine with The College of Phytotherapy. Here she continued her study of medical sciences – including anatomy, biochemistry, differential diagnosis, physiology, pathology and medicine - alongside subjects such as botany, material medica, nutrition, pharmacology and pharmacognosy. Through its clinical training programme she gained practical experience at the student clinics of the College of Phytotherapy in Battle, Leeds, London, Scarborough and Sheffield, as well as the Universities of East London, Middlesex and Westminster. She completed a Clinical Examination course at the British School of Osteopathy, covering Abdominal, Cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Respiratory physical examination techniques. During this time she also trained in Swedish Massage and Indian Head Massage.

Michaela graduated with a BSc degree in Herbal Medicine in May 2008, after an extended period of study, punctuated by two wonderful children, who both challenged and enriched her studies.

Michaela's approach to treatment is quite simple - she will ask you a lot of questions, and will also give you plenty of time to be listened to.  She will want to understand the background and any patterns to your health issues.  An initial consultation will last at least an hour and will include a full, detailed medical history and any physical examinations deemed necessary.  Herbal Medicine treats the whole person not the disease and Michaela works towards identifying and treating the underlying cause not merely the symptoms.  No two patients are alike, even if they appear to be suffering similar symptoms, so no two prescriptions are exactly the same.

Your diet and lifestyle will also be evaluated.  It is an essential part of a herbalist's approach to health to take into account the nutritional status of their patient.  Every cell of the body is made up of the food we eat.  If the body is not provided with the fuel it requires to repair itself, then little progress can be made to improve health, no matter how good the intentions of both the practitioner and the patient. Advice will be given on ways to make any improvements.  A review of lifestyle, work patterns, exercise and leisure can often be fruitful in highlighting ways in which you can help to shift the causes and worsening factors for your condition.

As part of her passion and commitment to providing holistic complementary healthcare that is accessible to all Michaela fully supports the clinic philosophy as a Community Interest Company.  She will be taking part in weekly Drop-In Clinics in Briar House Resources (next to the clinic) which enable you to try out several of the therapies in shorter (and cheaper) sessions.  She is also commited to working towards offering free and substantially reduced treatment charges as well as being involved in the outreach programme offering educational talks and short mini-treatments for charities and groups
