I qualified as an Acupuncturist at the Northern College of Acupuncture after four years of study and I have been in private practice for 7 years. As well as Acupuncture treatment I offer Chinese massage, Acupressure, Magnet Therapy and Sports Injury treatments, specialising in running and cycling injuries.
I have been a Registered General Nurse since 1989, qualifying from York School of Nursing and I have nursed in the Intensive Care Unit and more recently with NHS Direct giving me a very broad range of experience in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine.
Therapies Available
Acupuncture: has been used in China for over 2500 years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine there are channels of energy that flow around the body in a similar way to blood vessels. This energy is known as Qi (pronounced chee) and the channels are seen as being linked to the internal organs and affecting the way they function. The practitioner uses needles at specific points to affect the flow of the energy and restore harmony and balance to the body.
The needles used are very fine, almost as fine as a human hair, and there is no pain when they are inserted. They are in place for approx. 15-20 minutes and are single use only. Because the needles used are so fine and not at all like the hypodermic needles used in hospitals, GP surgeries etc. many people who dislike needles are able to tolerate the acupuncture needles very well.
Traditional Chinese Medicine with acupuncture seeks to bring the body, mind and spirit into harmony and balance and so in addition to being used for specific problems acupuncture can also be used to promote general well being and good health by maintaining and strengthening the function of the body.
Acupressure: uses exactly the same points and philosophy as acupuncture but the points are stimulated with finger pressure and not needles. It can be used as an alternative for people who have a needle phobia or to stimulate additional points during treatment.
Massage: is a wide ranging treatment. It can be used for general relaxation and stress relief, helping to provide a feeling of well being and calmness. It can be beneficial in enabling tense and knotted muscles to relax and work properly again so can help to relieve muscle and joint pain. Sport specific massage can prepare muscles for events and help the recovery process after exercise by promoting blood flow and dispersing toxins.
Magnet therapy: can be used as a treatment on its own or as an additional therapy alongside acupuncture or massage. Small but powerful magnets are placed on the skin and left in place for up to 2 days. The magnetic field from the magnet penetrates the skin and promotes healing by increasing blood flow into the tissue. This is very beneficial in sports injuries and soft tissue damage where it is used directly on an injured area and also on adjacent acupuncture points. When the magnets are used as a supplement to acupuncture on specific points then this point receives a constant low level stimulation in order to promote the healing process.
Sports injuries: and soft tissue injuries will be treated by an appropriate combination of the above treatment modes, depending on severity and personal preference. As many cycling injuries can be caused or worsened by incorrect riding position I will soon be offering a cycle set-up service using the same system that was used to set up the bikes of 7 times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.
For all the above therapies a course of treatment may be needed depending on the nature of the complaint, the severity and duration etc. and this will be discussed at the initial consultation.
