What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a natural, holistic therapy based on the principle that tiny
areas known as reflexes on the feet and hands are linked to each organ,
system and part of the body. While many people assume reflexology developed as a therapy only recently, in fact it is thousands of years old, and has
it’s roots in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, China and India. These civilisations, and probably many others, all practiced some form of pressure therapy on the feet.
Reflexology in the West was developed in the early twentieth century by an
American physician called William Fitzgerald. He discovered he could relieve
pain, and improve the condition causing the pain, by applying pressure to
other parts of the body. Eunice Ingham, a masseuse, developed Fitzgerald’s work. By performing reflexology on thousands of pairs of feet, she was able
to discover, and map out, the reflex points of the feet which correspond to the organs and parts of the body.
Using precise hand and finger techniques to work on these reflex points, the reflexologist can improve circulation, promote deep relaxation, and restore
balance within the body. By activating the body’s own healing systems, reflexology can help improve and maintain health, well-being and vitality.
Who can benefit from reflexology?
Virtually everyone, at all stages of life, can benefit from this gentle, but very effective, natural treatment. Reflexology is suitable for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions,
including
• sleep problems
• digestive problems
• stress and stress-related conditions
• hormonal imbalances (eg menopausal symptoms
and PMT)
• spinal and muscular pain, and whiplash
The treatment
The first treatment involves taking a case history of your past and current
health and lifestyle. You then remove your shoes and socks and recline
comfortably on a treatment couch. The reflexologist applies precise
pressure techniques to all the reflexes of each foot, interspersed with
massage and relaxing techniques designed to promote calm, and enhance the
therapeutic effect of the treatment. If there is an area of imbalance in
the body, it may manifest as a feeling of tenderness or tension in a certain
area of the foot, but this discomfort is fleeting, and the treatment as a
whole is very comfortable and relaxing. Many people are embarrassed about
the appearance of their feet, but the reflexologist will always find them
fascinating, as feet can reveal so much about a person’s health. And, as
someone with very sensitive feet myself, I can assure you that reflexology
doesn’t tickle!
