Emma Yates - Butler
Certified Harp Therapy Practitioner
People of all ages and circumstances benefit from the Therapeutic Harp. Music can really go to the heart of the matter and the harp produces a very pure tone. It has been used throughout the ages as an instrument of healing and as such is one of the oldest instruments. In particular I would suggest harp therapy to anyone looking for stress relief, those suffering from long term or chronic dis-ease and those facing major life changes/crisis/loss. It has been shown that Harp therapy can relieve anxiety, depression, fatigue, sadness and emotional distress in many circumstances. The soothing sounds of the harp played with a healing intent can effect changes on all levels, i.e. physical, mental, emotional & spiritual.
Harp therapy has its roots in bedside musicianship. I'm quite prepared to make home/hospital/hospice visits alongside my work at the clinic. Before going into an institution I will always make sure I have express permission from the staff. My day-to-day availability is a key feature of this work as is the potential to turn the harp around and create music together interactively. In this way harp therapy can aid in rehabilitation and recovery processes.????
Each harp therapy session is uniquely tailored to the client, as there is such a vast scope of who may be helped by harp therapy. Typically I improvise, matching the mood of the client and other factors such as heart rate and rate/pattern of breathing. Reiki and self-care techniques are often included. I can also play requests.
I first came to the harp as a child and ever since I began playing in performance settings people have repeatedly exclaimed how the harp music touched them. I came to be interested in healing/alternative therapies through my own illness as a teenager, and also through losing my mum to ovarian cancer in 2000. The IHTP course was therefore a natural progression, drawing on my life experiences and interests (t'ai chi, kung fu, yoga).
I've been studying harp therapy since 2003 with the International Harp Therapy Program, which is based in California along with being mum to Susan and Arthur, and Reuben who came along in February 2005. I'm also a doula with doula uk, see Empower Doula Support at www.doula.me.uk available for births (home & hospital - with harp if requested) and postnatally (helping out in the early weeks at home).?? I have had two home births & one hospital birth myself and breastfed all my children long term. I am currently a trainee breastfeeding counsellor with the NCT.??
To enquire or book a consultation at The Healing Clinic please telephone 01904 679868.
The prices quoted for the consultations are for those taking place at the Healing Clinic only. Especially for those in an institutional setting or housebound, we will first need to meet and discuss you or your loved one's individual circumstances and requirements (for example, would you like me to be on-call for you/your loved one or would you prefer a regular slot?) before agreeing on a fee and signing a contract. I normally charge travel expenses of £0.40 per mile.
