About Acupuncture
The focus of Chinese Medicine is in improving the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of the patient as well as the treatment of specific symptoms. Acupuncture has been practised in China and other Eastern cultures for thousands of years and works on the principle that our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy – qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through the channels (meridians) of the body. The flow of qi can be disturbed by a number of factors including emotions, hereditary factors, infections, lifestyle and trauma. Inserting fine needles into acupuncture points on the meridians of the body through which the qi flows can help to restore the body’s natural balance and stimulate our own healing response.
What conditions can be helped with Acupuncture?
Some patients seek treatment for particular symptoms or conditions, whilst others choose acupuncture to prevent illness or to strengthen their constitution. Acupuncture can be beneficial for:
- Pain and neuralgia
- Musculo-skeletal problems
- Digestive disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Headaches and migraine
- Anxiety and depression
- Gynaecological problems
- Supporting natural processes such as pregnancy, childbirth and menopause
- Fertility and to support IVF treatment
Because Chinese Medicine aims to determine and treat the causes as well as the symptoms of disharmony, patients often experience an improved sense of overall well being from a course of Acupuncture treatment including better energy levels, improved sleep and a greater sense of emotional balance.
Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages and can be used safely alongside conventional medicine where necessary.
How I work
During your first visit I will ask you in some detail about the condition you are seeking treatment for as well as your general health, medical history and lifestyle. My approach to treatment often involves the use of acupressure massage, moxibustion (where moxa, a warming herb, is burned over acupuncture points or along meridians move stagnation of qi) and cupping therapy (using glass cups to draw the qi by creating a vacuum between the cup and the skin) in addition to acupuncture. I feel that it is extremely important for patient and practitioner to work in partnership to understand and explore the holistic nature of the therapy and I may show patients acupressure points or discuss dietary or lifestyle changes which can be made at home to assist the healing process.
A typical course of treatment will be 6-10 weekly sessions, however this may vary depending on the nature and duration of the condition. If you wish to discuss with me whether acupuncture could help you, please contact me at the Healing Clinic, on my mobile or by e-mail.
