Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is a gentle, non invasive method combining meridian energy therapy with talk therapy. This powerful combination has been successfully applied to various challenges, big and small.
Those experiencing pain often find relief with EFT. Those suffering with anxiety or phobias begin to find their stress lifting and their freedom gradually returning. Those battling addictions such as nicotine or unhealthy food find their cravings alleviated.
We can also bring EFT to issues that seem unrelated to health, issues like finances. Although it may not seem like it, our financial challenges often stem from limiting beliefs that we picked up in our childhood and reinforced throughout life. EFT can help us find and clear limiting beliefs around finances as well as beliefs we’ve formed in other areas of life, like relationships, family, and more.
We can even use EFT to work on healing past lives. Using the same methods that we use to work on childhood issues, we can go back further and explore our distant past, uncovering much deeper origins to the patterns we see unfolding in our lives now and finding resolution.
Because any problem we can experience has a corresponding blockage in the meridian system, EFT can be effective on everything, as EFT founder Gary Craig says ‘try it on everything!’
An EFT session
An EFT session with me begins with a brief discussion of the issue you’re addressing. If it’s your first session I will show you where the EFT tapping points are on your body and how to tap. Throughout our sessions you will tap on your own body, mirroring the tapping I will do on mine. This not only makes EFT non invasive for those who prefer to avoid physical contact, it also makes it an empowering technique that you can use on your own between sessions, which you are encouraged to do.
There are 9 main tapping points (shown in the diagram). Once we’ve established where the points are, I will summarise the issue into short statements which you repeat while tapping on the points.
After our first few rounds we will reassess the issue, often your physical or emotional sensation of the problem will have shifted so we will repeat the process from this new vantage point.
At each stage we will assess our progress using the SUD (Subjective Units of Distress) scale. This is a way of monitoring the effectiveness of our tapping. To use the SUD scale we look at the strongest emotional or physical sensation connected to the problem and rate how strong that sensation is on a scale from 0-10. For example, if you were working on pain, how strong is the pain? If it’s anxiety, tune in to the cause and rate how intense that feeling is.
Using EFT at home
If you’d like to try EFT yourself, grab a pen and paper and let’s give it a try now. Starting with a physical sensation is the easiest way to get results so if you have a headache or you’ve woken with a stiff neck, work on that. If not, tune into your body and scan for any tension, maybe in your neck or shoulders, maybe elsewhere.
Once you’ve decided what to work on, describe it in detail. Write down your description so you can refer back to it and include things like the nature of the pain, is it pulling, stabbing, aching? What other words could describe it? If that pain had a colour what would it be? If it was made of something physical, what would that be? And finally, if there was an emotion inside that sensation, what would that be?
Now rate the sensation on the SUD scale as described above and you’re ready to start tapping. Referring to the diagram, begin tapping gently with two or three fingers on the Karate Chop (KC) point and repeat three times: Even though I have this...(describe the sensation)… that’s OK and I deeply and completely love and accept myself. Now working from top to bottom, tap gently through the rest of the points while repeating the short phrases you wrote to describe the sensation.
Finally reassess the sensation. Return to your SUD rating and see if there has been a change. You can repeat the process as many times as you like as the sensation shifts. If you don’t see an improvement, that’s a sign that you need to delve deeper into the underlying cause, a one to one session might be helpful.
